The main aim of the Scholarship Programme for the Hungarian Diaspora (hereinafter: the Programme) is to give support to foreign students with Hungarian identity to pursue their studies in Hungarian higher education institutions. The Programme is organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, managed by Tempus Public Foundation. The Programme includes members of the Hungarian diaspora communities in every country in the world, except in the Member States of the European Union, the Republic of Serbia and the Zakarpatska Oblast part of Ukraine.

Application
- The Application is completely free.
- You can submit your application in the online application system at apply.diasporascholarship.hu. Please note that if you apply for the Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship Programme, you do not need to submit a separate application to ELTE and it is enough if you submit your application in the online application system of the Diaspora Scholarship Programme

Application criteria:
- Hungarian identity and connection to a diaspora community declared in a motivation letter and a statement,
- residency in one of the supported regions,
- recommendation letter from a Diaspora Organisation or the Hungarian Representation of the respective territory,
- living outside Hungary for at least 10 years before the submission of the application,
- applicant undertakes to learn Hungarian as a foreign language and Hungarian culture during his/her whole study period and undertakes to pass a Hungarian as a foreign language exam at CEFR B2 level minimum,
- applicant undertakes to help the local Hungarian diaspora organisation in a foreign country with community work for the specified period in the Call for Applications after graduation.
The applicant must complete the admission requirements set by the host higher education institution. The admission process is managed by higher education institutions online.
The motivation letter will be evaluated by a professional body, the Evaluation Committee, composed of members invited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The award of the scholarship is based on the results of the admission procedure and the proposal of the Evaluation Committee.

Provisions covered by the scholarship
Scholarship holders are exempted from the payment of tuition fee.
The scholarship ensures:
- Monthly stipend (upon request) - non-degree, bachelor’s, master’s and one-tier master’s level: monthly amount of HUF 43,700 (cca. 132 USD) contribution to the living expenses in Hungary, for 12 months a year, for the whole duration of the scholarship period
- Accommodation contribution (upon request) - free dormitory place (depending on institutional capacity) or a contribution of HUF 40,000/month (cca. 121 USD) to accommodation costs for the whole duration of the scholarship period. (Please note that if the student does not live in the dormitory, the HUF 40,000/month is a contribution to the rental costs, and in bigger cities – especially in the capital city – this contribution would not cover the full amount of rental costs.)
- Medical insurance - health care services according to the relevant Hungarian legislation (Act CXXII of 2019 on Entitlements to Social Security Benefits and on Funding These Services) and supplementary medical insurance for up to HUF 65,000 (cca. 197 USD) a year/person
- Travel contribution: one-off travel allowance (upon request)
- Travel allowance of HUF 330,000 (cca. 998 USD) if the distance between Budapest and the applicant’s place of residence (=city/town) is 8,000 km or more (the distance is calculated based on the Erasmus+ Distance Calculator).
- The one-off travel allowance is provided to help the Scholarship Holder travel to Hungary at the beginning of their studies, and it is provided only once. If the request for this allowance is approved, it is transferred to the Scholarship Holder following arrival and enrolment.
- Travel contribution: Hungary Pass - reimbursement of a Hungary Pass, which entitles the Scholarship Holder to unlimited travel throughout Hungary (e.g. trains and interurban buses in all counties).
Available study programmes
In the case of English language study programmes, the scholarship holder must also participate in Hungarian as a foreign language course during the period of studies. For the studies planned in Hungarian, we will provide an opportunity to participate in a Hungarian language preparatory course.
