Call for Applications for the Judit Kovács Scholarship for the 2023-2024 Academic Year

This year marks the sixth occasion for the awarding of the Judit Kovács Scholarship. The most recent recipient was Luca Rózsahegyi, a primary teacher student majoring in TEYL.

The scholarship was founded by Dr. Judit Kovács, Associate Professor at ELTE TÓK. The namesake of the scholarship spent nearly two decades at the ELTE Faculty of Primary and Preschool Education and its predecessor institutions, ELTE TÓFK, and the Budapest Teacher Training College. Her teaching and scientific research focused on early Hungarian-English bilingual education and teacher training for this field. Throughout her career, she combined her teaching and research activities with practical application, contributing to the spread of early bilingual education in Hungary by participating in the establishment of nearly 25 such institutions (schools and kindergartens) and providing professional support for their work. She continues to consider it important that teacher training for early bilingual education and upbringing receive proper emphasis. Therefore, she decided to personally support the commitment of well-trained students from the ELTE Faculty of Primary and Preschool Education to this field.

The Judit Kovács Scholarship aims to support students of the ELTE Faculty of Primary and Preschool Education who are in the teacher, kindergarten teacher, and infant and early childhood education bachelor's programs, and who show a strong interest and commitment to bilingual education during their studies and intend to work in such institutions after graduation.

The scholarship can be awarded to students who:

  • write their thesis in a topic related to the above-mentioned scientific field in English and achieve excellent results,
  • successfully participate in the Faculty's Scientific Student Circle (TDK) and earn the right to compete in the national competition,
  • complete their professional practice in a bilingual school, preferably in a bilingual kindergarten or nursery.

The scholarship is awarded by a four-member board of trustees, consisting of:

  • Dr. Éva Márkus, Associate Professor, Dean
  • Dr. Judit Kovács, Associate Professor, retired lecturer at the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, researcher in the field of bilingualism, founder
  • Dr. Éva Trentinné Benkő, Associate Professor, lecturer at the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, researcher in the field of bilingualism
  • Prof. Dr. János Döbrössy, University Professor, President of the ELTE TÓK Heritage Foundation.
